How do I add volume to the roots of my hair?

My hair is medium thickness, layered (longest layer level with arm-pit. I know that sounds gross, sorry...=)). My hair is also curly, but I blow dry and straighten it. I have tried everything, from different blow-drying tricks to different gels, mousses, creams, etc, but nothing works. Ideally I would like to achieve hair that looks like Lindsay Lohans, where its full at the top and straight or curled at the bottom. HELP!

How do I add volume to the roots of my hair?

While blow drying use a round bristle brush, grab hair at the root with the brush and pull straight up with the brush. You can either do it straight or curl the end at the bottom. Try a couple of different professional products that you put in your hair prior to blow drying it that helps with volume. If you don't want a curl at the bottom you can use a flat iron and only run it on the ends where you want it straight. After the volume height is achieved use a finishing spray. Nothing too heavy because you dont' want it to be heavy or go flat. I would reccomend Nexxtacy by Nexxus. It's a very light spray, but it has some elasticity with it so it'll hold but you can still run your fingers through your hair.

If you don't have time to use the brush, try blow drying your hair upside down with the same type of product and then curl/flat iron the ends. Hope this helps!!

Blow dry or towel wrap your hair and REMOVE some moisture before you apply product, emulsify (rub it around in your hands) your "volume" product and apply at the roots, blow dry your hair and use a round brush. If you can't use the brush while drying... dry and then use a large round brush like its a curling irion or velcro roller. Blast the section with hot air and then cool shot or let it cool before you remove the brush.

If you take a shower at night (even if you dont..) do french braids on both sides of your head before you go to sleep and then when u wake up take them out and brush ur hair with ur hands and then put mousse in it and scrunch it a little.. looks really curly! mines like that now!! if you want to be daring you could try getting an A-line bob hair cut, its really cute and short in the back and longer in the front, to fight the frizz i use after party by bed head to keep the shine and tame the frizzzzies!

I have brown hair w/ blonde highlights that I just got cut for summer. It is about shoulder length. What I did was I started to use a straightener and I bought Tre Semme Frizz control. I also have layers so I do my hair by layer, right %26amp; left side, and back. I seperate it with clips. I put the frizz control stuff in each part one at a time and depending on how straight your hair is, decide what level of tempurature your straightener should be set at . Slide it from your root to the bottom of your hair a few times and then I put Pantene max hold. I do this for each section of my hair. My hair is straight but it kinda curls at the end. Most of my friends' straighteners have speed (1-39??) dials but mine has low-medium-high. Whatever you think would work for your hair!!!!!

Okay, the first thing that you want to do is get a trim from a good hairdresser ... that will trim those 'frizzy ends' and 'square it up' so it doesn't look ragged.

Next ... learn to 'braid' your hair, and how to 'french braid' it. You can also do really cute 'buns' by just putting in a 'loose' pony tail (at the top, the middle, the bottom, or even to one side) and then 'wind your hair around the band and use 'hairpins' or a 'net' to keep it there. Add some 'pretties' like 'decorative chopsticks' or large 'combs' with 'jewelery' or enameling on the top. Try getting a 'round comb' that 'locks' and hang your head and put it 'around' at the top of your head, and then 'curling it' so that the curls 'cascade down' ... use other combs or hairpins (some with roses, or jewels, or even little 'figurines') to help hold them in place.

DO NOT think that you'll be able to 'do a nice do' right before you go out ... PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. If you do have a 'special event' that you want to 'look really super' for, go to your hairdresser the first few times, and 'consult' with your hairdresser on different 'looks' ... then have it 'done up' and get a 'wrap' so it won't fall down if you get it done 'the day before.

As for 'keeping the frizz away' ... again, ask your hairdresser. Yes, it will be 'more expensive,' and you'll have to buy it at the hairdresser's shop most likely ... but it will definitely be 'money well spent' and a bottle of the 'really good stuff' that costs $20 usually lasts 5 times longer than the 'inexpensive' stuff you get for $5 at the store ... so you'll actually be 'saving money' by purchasing the 'better line' from your hairdresser.

i have the same problem!!!! when i curl my hair w/ a curling iron it last like an hour.... and then i used curling gel and it made my hair gross (stiff and a natural) plus it wouldn't do it in the back... i dont not if this will work or not b/c of your layers but wat i do is i wash my hair at night and once i get out of the show and let my hair semi dry ( so it is damp) w/o a hair dyer i braid it in 3 or 4 braids and sleep on it the next morning i put a tiny bit of gel in it and blow dye w/ a diffuser for about 5 minutes and im good to go

I would just use a curling iron...otherwise it won't get curly cues like you want.

spray a heat protector on your hair before curling, like tresemme curl activator, it also helps your curls stay.

then curl your whole head.

put a lot of hairspray on.

that usually makes my curls stay on for 2 days.

if you want, you can also add a little anti-frizz on afterward, shaking out the curls to make pretty waves.

i used to use a pencil. put jell on the strands of hair you'll be curling, place your pencil just like a roller, and roll it up...hold for about 30 seconds and take ou gently. It works for most people. good luck :)

You can pick a style that you like that may not look so good on you ie: a person with a chubby cheek face needs hair that is full to make it look thinner. I havent chemically straightened my hair for a some months and now the roots from the upper layer look really wavy but I THINK it's because the wavy part is just about two inches long, and the rest of the hair is about two and a half inches long so it can't curl properly. The bottom layer's straightened hair was cut so now that part is really really curly. I've been thinking of cutting the straightened hair so it'll be more uniform looking but somebody told me that I seem to have curly hair in the bottom layer and wavy in the top but I'm not sure if that's even possible!.

the pic has hair which are silky and straight.. if your hairs like that then you shouldent havre too much problem stying.. but if its coarser and thicker then here how you can do it..

after you wash let your hair dry naturally till its just a tiny little bit damp.. then tie it up in a bun with a scrunchie leaving only the bottom layer free.. take a large (preferably round) brush and a hair dryer and dry it straight moving the dryer at all times.. when this layer is dry undo the scrunchie.. take another layer and tie up again.. reapeat straitening on this layer.. keep doing till all your hair is done..

the benifit of this is that hair looks glossy and bouncy and doesent get damaged... unlike with straigetening irons..

and if you layers its easy to do..

if you want a change from the streight look try braiding damp hair into four loose braids before you sleep at night... when you open in the morning you'll have pretty cirls.. and its another no damage method for styling hair...

i'm stressing on low damage cos once hair gets damaged it takes a lot of time to regain its vitality.. be careful... dont mess around too much with your hair.. good luck bbye

take the front of ur hair and part it as if u was going to make a bang. once u done that put a clip on it to hold the hair in place for now. put the rest of ur hair in a ponytail in the middle of ur hair. now take the piece of hair from the front and comb it back , now take sections of ur hair and crimp all of the hair on top only. you are going to almost make a hump, once u r done crimping ur hair grab all of the pieces and wrap around ur ponytail loose and secure it with pins and hair spray.

Short Hair Help? (pic included)?

i have short hair and it's naturaly straight but i have volume and thick hair and i want it to look like this:

but how? should i straighten it first then curl it, or straighten it and then curl the first layer of my hair or straighten then braid my hair???? what should i do?

I say wash it and then put a straightning balm in it and blow dry with your dryer facing down from your scalp to the ends of your hair use one of thoes skinny connection things that looks like a duck beek that clips on the front of a dryer all the new ones come with it. then put a tiny drop of anti frizz and straighten it in layers and then after that take a FAT curling iorn and curl it in big fat strips and spray lots of hairspray. My advice to make it stay longer is when you curl it take a bobby pin and pin it up and hairspray it do your make up and then take the bobby pins. HOPE THIS WORKS i know its a lot of work but it will look nice

you should first put gel and moose then straighten it... then get an curling iron and curl it... make sure you do it a little loose so it wont stick and stay together... HOPE THIS WORK!

Hi all!

just wanted to see if anyone can help me. I went to a salon about 2 weeks ago, and I asked for them to high light my hair with blonde. They did it with foil and i thought it was fine. But when i got home and tried to straighten it out, there were NO HIGHLIGHTS (only on the top layer of my hair) So I went back the next day and had them fix it. THEY FRIED MY HAIR... NOT EVERYTIME I GET OUT OF THE SHOWER, AND MY HAIR DRIES IT STARTS TO BUNCH UP AND GETS ALL KNOTTED EVEN IF I COMB IT.

ITS ALL DRY AND NASTY NOW... ANYONE KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO MAKE IT COME BACK TO LIFE.

MY SISTER SAYS I SHOULD DO AN OLIVE OIL TREATMENT, BRING BACK THE NUTRIENTS IN MY HAIR OR SOMETHING... anyone else got any tips?

well sounds like you definately need a deep conditioning treatment. i suggest that you get one done at the salon, then get some deep hydrating shampoo and conditioner, my fav is biolage hydrate, the deep purple one. it works wonders, and when you shower, just leave the conditioner in for like 2 minutes or so, then rinse it all out. but you will definately need to get a deep conditioning treatment done first. then your hair will be back to being soft in no time. and i'm not sure exactly what they did to your hair because foils shouldn't fry your hair that bad. sounds to me like maybe the person didn't really know what they were doing all that well.

condition! condition! condition! ... buy pantene pro-v or another good conditioner and put it on your hair. cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for at least an hour.. wash it out and your hair should be better!

A hot oil treatmeant is what I'd try. You could also try a smoother, you might want a salon quality instead of store bought. Good luck!! Don't go back there, try someone else next time. I would call and let them know though.

Olive oil treatments are wonderful and will help alot, but you should also use a shampoo that has alot of moisture in it such as Sunsilk Hydra TLC. It's the pink bottle. There is a shampoo and conditioner for daily use and they also have a moisturizing hair mask for weekly use. I had my hair fried by a perm and this helped alot.

I think your sister is right, I would try a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment to put the nutrients back in. In the shower when you use conditioner try to let it sit on your hair for a few minutes. You might also want to go a little easy on your hair and not use as many products or the straightener for a few days. If that doesn't work try massaging your scalp to get some of your natural oils to come out to help your hair. Hope this helps, good luck!

There is a conditioner that is in a jug it is called Cholesterol. What you need to do is wash your hair then put the cholesterol in and leave it in put like a plastic shower cap over your head and then take a hot towel and wrap it around your head. The heat will open your hair and will soak up the Cholesterol. Do this about once a week. Leave the conditioner on for 15 to 20 minutes.

Deep condition it regularly and that should get some moisture back into it. You might have a stylist (get one from a different salon for sure!!!!) trim the fried ends until the damage grows out. What ever you do, never go back to that salon.

Go to Sally Beauty Supply or any beauty supply store and purchase a jar of Chloesterol. It is very thick-looks kind of like mayo. Put this on DRY hair, cover w/Saran wrap and go about your business around the house for an hour. Shampoo out with a moisturizing shampoo then spray on a leave-in conditioner. (Aussie products are wonderful!) Keep that up for a while-in about 3-4 days you should see excellent results. Good luck!

I have two different conditioners that worked for me whenever my hair got damaged from a perm that the stylist did wrong. the first one you can buy at wal-mart and it is called Neutragena Triple Moisture Once a week hair treatment. It comes in a jar and it has an orange lid on it. The second is a conditioner by TIGI and it is really rather expensive. I cannot remember the name of it though, all i know it that it comes in a gray/silver tube. Also, i dont know if this would help you or not, but i have put conditioner and even sometimes lotion in my hair of a night and slept with it like that (if you do this you will want to get an old pillow so you dont ruin your good one and pull your hair back so it dont get in your face and cause it to break out). mixing a tiny bit of baby oil with your shampoo helps too! good luck...i know its frustrating - ive been there!

okay so my semis in a couple weeks and im rly excited!

I have a very exotic appearance so its kinda hard sometimes to find suitable looks... i usually go mascara and powder regularly. I am half thai/ half white and i have tanned skin, very drak reddish brown hair, massive brown eyes (want them to look good... not HUGE with makeup). I'm tall and slender... i want to look gorg.

my dress is from elizabeth noel and its got a portrait neckline and its plaid with greys, blues, greens and bronzey-gold along with black. think blue morpho butterfly meets plaid and gold. i have bronzey gold shoes to match.

i want a good makeup look maybe with some bronzey gold? dont wanna look overdone either.

hair wise... its layered mid length and i can style it into wutever. i am in need of a haircut and will b getting it cut and styled the day of. so i am rly willing to do anything to it.
