Do wash in wash out hair dyes ruin your hair? ( im 13 if this helps )?

ive got medium length brown hair with short layers, but i would prefer to change my hair colour to make it more intresting. ive been wanting to dye it for a few years now, nd i feel like now is the time to do it. i was thinking about trying some wash in wash out hair dyes but one of my friends said it will ruin my hair. is that true?? also, if i tried to dye it blonde of black, which would work better? and not make my roots look real bad..?

Actually there are a lot of semi-permanent hair dyes that will actually help your hair be healthier - henna, manic panic, etc. But other semi-perm colors won't ruin your hair. You can't go lighter, so blonde won't work. And do be careful with it, because the color won't necessarily stick longer than it's supposed to, but it CAN (my friend wanted a maroon color for a day to celebrate our school colors and she ended up with a reddish tint for several weeks); so just choose something you can live with for a while.

Also, if you choose to do permanent hair dye, don't be afraid that IT will ruin your hair either. I've been using permanent hair dye since I was your age (I'm 21 now) and although it does dry your hair out, that's what color-shield and moisturizing conditioners are for. I bleach my hair platinum blonde once a month and my hair is doing just fine. Just don't do it more often than once a month with any color; moderation is key.

One more suggestion: If you get nervous about it, there are very subtle dyes that are meant to just kind of ooomph up your natural color. So if you get antsy about a dramatic change, consider just dying it something very close to what you already have. The color will be much richer and it will definitely make a noticeable difference. Sometimes the color you already have can be head-turning!

And remember: hair grows back. There's no way to permanently ruin all the hair that will ever grow on your head, no matter what crazy stuff you might do with it in your life.

OK and one more thing just to elaborate on what someone above said: Talking to a professional can be a good idea. I don't personally think it's necessary if you're just doing one solid color over your whole head, but if you're thinking about highlights or anything like that, definitely DO NOT do it yourself. My hair is blonde, as I said, but it has a chunk of black in the front, and it's taken me years to get into the swing of doing it myself the right way. But even for someone who's been doing it for years, the last time I renewed my colors, I ended up with a head full of grey hair. It was terrifying. My friend ended up telling me how to mix my own color and get my blonde back, but the ten hours in between were maybe the most stress I've ever had. Moral of the story: DO NOT do two or more colors on your own. Stick to one for now! Hair coloring is a lot of fun to do but if you're going to get crazy ideas, pay for someone else to do it until you really get the hang of it!

you can only go darker with wash-in hair dyes but be careful! if you have to mix two bottles together to get your color(in one box) you are creating a chemical reaction and may not be able to go back to your natural color

wash out hair color won't ruin your hair. Just be sure to use a good conditioner. Level 2 haircolor is what you'll want. Level 3 is a permanent dye. If you have dark hair and you want to change your haircolor to a lighter shade, even if you bought platinum blonde, it wouldn't work to lighten it. You'd have to go to a salon, have them lift the current color out, put in a neutralizer, then use the color you want. If you're talking about funky colors like pink or blue, I do not know how these would work for a level 2 color. Call or go into a local salon to get professional advice before you do anything. I'm sure your hair is lovely. They might recommend highlights or something very attractive for your face....good luck!

I've been told a "rinse" doesn't and I put a 'red' rinse through my hair when i was about your age. I swore that ever since I did I had a mahogany tinge to my hair.

Most likely it was coincidental and i just had it naturally like a lot of brunettes!

Maybe ring and ask the hairdressers.
