How would I get my hair like this?

I've recently gotten a hair cut and showed the stylist this picture:

She said my hair wasn't long enough at the time to get this and told me that I'd have to wait a bit before it would look like that (she cut it a short version I guess).

So I'm curious if I would have to use any wax or putty to get it to look like this. So far my hair is just layered and I wear a hat to flatten it down to my head (since it poofs).

Any advice (for fixing the poofyness as well) is much appreciated. (I have thick black and straight hair that has been thinned out and layered)

Looks to me like you could just use a little bit of wax or styling gel and just kind of run your fingers through your hair.
